Superior physical therapy in a setting as serene as a spa...

Taking care of your body is more than a luxury, it's a necessity. Whether you are recovering from surgery, an accident or an illness; dealing with the challenges of long term physical conditions; or trying to give your body the nurturing care it needs to thrive, Aquatic Therapy of the North Shore is a wise choice.

The environment at ATNS is nurturing in itself - sunlight streams through skylights onto abundant greenery surrounding a pristine pool gently heated to 92 degrees. In this pool our staff of skilled therapists can provide you with the physical therapy you need following surgery or an accident; develop therapies to help you deal with chronic or short-term illness; or just pamper yourself with spa-quality classes and treatments that will soothe the spirit as well as the body. The staff at ATNS is composed of highly skilled physical therapists and nurse practitioners who are also trained in yoga, massage, and Watsu®. Somatique Flow®, our passive therapy technique, and The 'berge Technique® is our signature active aquatic therapy.

If you are recovering from an injury or surgery, ATNS's physical therapists can provide you with the physical therapy you need. Our gentle, nurturing approach to therapy is generally less stressful to the body than land-based therapies and can help you reduce your medication, strengthen the effected area and build stamina, regain your mobility in less time, and help you achieve quicker results while reducing stress and building self-confidence. ATNS accepts many forms of health insurance and is fully qualified to provide you with the finest care possible.

Those suffering with long or short term health challenges like arthritis, fibromyalgia, heart disease, and multiple sclerosis find ATNS's gentle therapy to be extremely beneficial. Because you are immersed in warm, comforting water your body is buoyant and not constrained by gravity. People who have experienced difficulty with movement often find the lack of gravity and the warmth of the water lets them move more freely, stretch muscles gently, build strength and increase flexibility while gaining self-assurance and reducing the depression often associated with physical illness.

Even if you are not dealing with illness or injury, ATNS's special treatments can be a wonderful way to pamper yourself, reduce stress, increase relaxation, and build self-esteem. Whether you join one of our water-fitness classes or treat yourself to a private Watsu® treatment (think of it as gentle massage while suspended weightlessly in warm water), we promise you an experience that is both healing and a sensory delight.

Aquatic Therapy of the North Shore is a full service Physical Therapy practice. While we specialize in water-based physical therapy, we also offer some land based therapies, manual therapies, and some alternative therapies. Our philosophy toward patient care allows us the use any of several techniques to help a client, but the most powerful healing and rehabilitation come from the water.

Why is Deep Water Important?
Deep water is water that is over 6' deep. The theory is to work in a vertical suspended position in the deep water, so that your head is kept just above the water. We achieve this by using various forms of flotation equipment that will suspend you. In this position we can strengthen the body in a more natural way that is conducive to life on land. In shallow H20 you still have a portion of your body out of the water so gravity is still affecting injured areas. When all of your body is not submerged, when you are still standing on the bottom of the pool, still bearing a portion of your body weight, this results in an increase in pain and perhaps additional damage to injured areas. As we know, when you are in a significant amount of pain it is difficult to strengthen and condition the body, therefore working in deep water offers a less painful option.

In deep water, we can stretch and lengthen muscles and joints in all planes of movement with even resistance in all planes. This is totally unique to deep H20. In this setting there is virtually no effect of gravity on joints and injured body parts. Consequently, movements to strengthen and increase ROM are less painful or not painful at all. The space between joints is subtly separated in a vertical suspended position in Deep H20, allowing blood flow and nutrients essential to healing to enter the injured areas. Deep water is important in treating back, hip, knee, ankle, feet, trunk, neck, shoulder, etc., well, you get the idea…..
